Philosophy Documentary Film on The Before the Floods Paper

Philosophy, Documentary, Film, Before, Floods, Paper

  • View one or more pre-selected documentary films
  • Locate an important issue in environmental ethics [it will be up to you to identify the specific issue in question];
  • Take a stand on the issue (pro, con, or “middle-of-the road”) [this will be expressed in your thesis statement];
  • Support your position with reasons and evidence [this will be the main body of the paper where the “research” comes in];
  • Identify one or more opposing views and respond to/rebut them [this will be your “objections and replies” section, which also may require research].

.

Your assignment is to write a philosophy paper (approximately 1700 words minimum to 2100 words maximum) that incorporates what you have learned in the course with your own view on a particular issue within one of several broad areas of inquiry and research in environmental ethics. The areas, which correspond to topics covered in the course, are:

  • Use and Abuse of Natural Resource
  • Energy: Pollution and Renewables
  • Animal Rights and Moral Standing
  • Ecofeminism and Social Justice
  • Political Ecology
  • Climate Change

This is a research paper, and part of your research will be to watch one or more documentary films on your topic of choice (within these areas). In the “Course Resources” tab in the left navigation menu, you will find a selection of over 40 documentary films on topics in each of these areas.

It is recommended that you view several of these, in different areas, to determine which topic most interests, excites, agitates, or even provokes or angers you. You may count these documentary films as external sources in your paper. They are all recent (most are from 2013 and later), informative, well produced, and well worth viewing. They are housed in the National University Online Library in the “Films on Demand” resource.

You should be able to view the film embedded in the Course Resource content item without having to navigate away from the course. When prompted by the NU Library site for ID and a password, enter your current National University 9-DIGIT ID number and your 6-DIGIT (MMDDYY) birth date.

Your specific task here is to find an issue in environmental ethics that is addressed in the film and take an original stand on that issue. This will be the thesis of your paper. Some of these documentaries are mostly factual reporting, and while issues may be raised, the filmmaker(s) may not take a particular stand on any specific issue.

In other cases, you will clearly detect a particular point of view and position taken on various issues. Some of these films feature philosophical debates, and these are the best examples of arguers taking stands on opposing sides of an issue. In any case, decide what the issue in question will be in your paper, and determine where you will stand on that issue: pro, con, or middle-of-the road, on that issue.

Part of your grade on the paper will be based on the originality and significance of the issue you raise. Be sure to clearly state your thesis early in the paper (first or second paragraph). In the body of the paper, you will be supporting your thesis as well as responding to and rebutting opposing views.

Once you have introduced the topic and stated your thesis in the introductory section of the paper, you will begin the work of constructing your argument(s) in support of your position as well as analyzing and evaluating the arguments of possible views in opposition to or in conflict with your view.

You should be able to derive a great deal of evidence for your arguments and evaluations from the film(s) you watch, but you are of course welcome to do as much additional outside research as you need to do to establish grounds for your supporting arguments as well as your rebuttals of opposing views.

The paper should integrate the philosophical concepts and ethical principles covered in the writings of at least three of the authors featured in the course Recommended Readings into the body of the argument or discussion of the thesis.

In sum, the paper should refer to at least three sources taken from the Recommended Readings for the course and two additional external sources, one of which must be chosen from among the documentary films compiled for you here. You may choose a second documentary film for your second external source, or you may use a standard secondary source such as a book, article, reference text, or appropriately selected web page.

Heroin Documentary Case Study Essay Paper Assignment Help

If you watch one of these and write up a brief response–what you liked, hated, learned, felt, thought, etc.–you’ll get some extra credit. Let’s say, write between 2 page (double spaced) and you’ll get 5 points on a major paper (whichever one needs it the most at the end).

I haven’t watched all of these, but they are related to what we’ve been discussing or I think it just might include some vital information. Here are the films you can choose from: The documentary is called heroine you are two write two pages about the documentary you learned about.

Heroin is an illegal, highly addictive drug processed from morphine, a naturally occurring substance extracted from the seed pod of certain varieties of poppy plants. It is typically sold as a white or brownish powder that is “cut” with sugars, starch, powdered milk, or quinine. Pure heroin is a white powder with a bitter taste that predominantly originates in South America and, to a lesser extent, from Southeast Asia, and dominates U.S. markets east of the Mississippi River.3 Highly pure heroin can be snorted or smoked and may be more appealing to new users because it eliminates the stigma associated with injection drug use. “Black tar” heroin is sticky like roofing tar or hard like coal and is predominantly produced in Mexico and sold in U.S. areas west of the Mississippi River.3 The dark color associated with black tar heroin results from crude processing methods that leave behind impurities. Impure heroin is usually dissolved, diluted, and injected into veins, muscles, or under the skin.

Crazy Love (Klores, Stevens, 2007)

The Most Dangerous Man in America (Goldsmith, Ehrlich, 2009)

Brotherhood of Skiiers (2018) (Links to an external site.)

This Land (2020) (Links to an external site.)

We Hike to Heal (2020) (Links to an external site.)

(Everything is a Youtube link so that you have access to captions, but you can find the website of the filmmaker, Faith E. Briggs, here (Links to an external site.)and the website for This Land here (Links to an external site.), and I strongly encourage you to look through those materials. Also, note that the documentaries do have corporate sponsors – filmmakers have to eat too, y’all.)Then…

In a brief response of at least 100 words, discuss two of the following questions while referencing the documentaries:

What do our text and these documentaries have in common? What is one specific commonality you can find between Our History is the Future and these short documentaries?

There’s some information here that folks might not consider to be academic; the stories are personal; the personal is very political right now. Why is it important, especially in an interdisciplinary studies program, to access and discuss materials that are not academic in nature, along with the academic papers and texts that we read? Why do we need to look at the experiences and knowledge of folks who don’t have “Dr.” in front of their name?

and do these: Let’s discuss Alain Resnais’s oneiric meditations on mass murder, Night and Fog and Hiroshima, Mon Amour.

Choose at least one of the following example prompts plus a peer response prompt:

Discuss the topics for this week in dialog with the films: Genre, Documentary, and the Nouvelle Vague (choose one or more of the following prompts to write about):

Describe one or two ways that Resnais incorporates “narrative storytelling” into his documentary, Night and Fog.

Describe one or two ways that Resnais incorporates “documentary filmmaking” into his narrative, Hiroshima, Mon Amour.

What features of the Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave) did you notice in Hiroshima, Mon Amour?

What are some of the challenges to “documenting” catastrophic trauma that Resnais addresses in either/both film/(s).

Step Two: Post in the Class Discussion

Your post is worth 80 possible points

After you select a work of art, write and post a 550-750 word Formal Analysis (Visual Analysis) in which you describe and examine the form of the work of art, especially what the medium, visual elements, and principles of design contribute to its visual power and meaning. Organize your analysis into four paragraphs, listed below, and follow the instructions. Although not required, it may be helpful to use headings.

At the beginning of each paragraph, write a concise topic sentence that clearly states what the paragraph is about. This topic sentence will help frame the controlling argument for each paragraph and will help your reader follow your key ideas.

PARAGRAPH ONE: DESCRIPTION OF SUBJECT

This paragraph should be between 150-200 words

Post an image of the work of art you are writing about.

In your topic sentence, clearly state the subject and/or identify the main issue, key theme, or narrative (story) the artist is working with. Do this in one sentence. Please note that in non-objective works, the primary subject can often be found among the visual elements or design principles (e.g. color, scale, etc.).

For example: “The Thinker, by French artist Auguste Rodin, is a sculpture of a pensive, yet powerful, male nude.”

Next, describe the overall work as you would to someone who hasn’t seen it. Paint a detailed picture with words. Your description should be so clear and specific that the reader can imagine the work of art in their mind as they read. Do not simply list what you see, but thoroughly describe the different areas of the work. Use lots of adjectives and avoid naming. Move from general to specific observations. If human figures are represented, describe their most dominant characteristics, including expressions, poses, gestures and how they are placed in relation to one another.

Remember, this is an opening paragraph and you can go into more depth about the medium in the second paragraph.

PARAGRAPH TWO: MEDIUM AND MATERIALS

This paragraph should be between 150-200 words.

In your topic sentence, summarize the artist’s unique approach to using their medium and materials to create their work. Do this in one sentence. Remember that this paragraph is about the physical process of making the work and not the visual elements or design principles.

For example: “Rodin’s expressive approach to modeling his sculpture makes the subject feel more human.”

Next, describe this unique approach in detail, and explain how it impacts, or is integral to, the viewer’s experience of the work. What is the artist trying to say or express by doing it this way? In other words, explain how this approach reinforces the message, theme, or narrative (story) in the work and contributes to making a powerful visual statement.

You must include 2-3 specific supporting observations from your chosen art object. Each sentence must be clear and descriptive.

PARAGRAPH THREE: COMPOSITION

This paragraph should be between 150-200 words.

In your topic sentence, clearly state the most dominant visual element or principle of design used to compose the work. Do this in one sentence. Please refer to this helpful Guide to the Visual Elements and Principles of Design.

Actions

For example: “Rodin’s exaggeration of the proportions of the hands and feet make the figure seem physically powerful when seen from below.” (In this example, “proportion” is a principle of design.)

Next, describe in rich detail how the artist used this specific visual element or principle of design to organize the work of art. How did the artist’s use of this element or principle underpin the composition and/or become an integral part of what the artist was trying to say or express? In other words, explain how it reinforces the message, theme, or narrative (story) in the work and contributes to making a powerful visual statement.

You must include 2-3 specific supporting observations from your chosen art object. Each sentence must be clear and descriptive.

PARAGRAPH FOUR: EVALUATION

This paragraph should be between 100-150 words

In your topic sentence, briefly summarize whether or not you think the work of art was effective or successful, and why. Do this in one sentence. After writing the previous three paragraphs, you should be better able to interpret and understand the work of art.

For example: “In The Thinker, Rodin successfully depicts a man who thinks deeply, yet has the physical power to act.”

Next, analyze your own reaction to the work of art and evaluate its effectiveness in more detail. You will explain the reasons why you think the work is successful and support your reasoning with 2-3 direct references to the work of art you selected.

You may wish to consider the following:

What initial ideas or feelings come to mind after experiencing the work of art?

Do you identify with the work? Based on your life experiences, is it personally relevant to you?

What is it about the work of art that you like the most? The message? The way it was made or composed?

Are you engaged by the formal characteristics, such as the way the artist used light, color, texture, space, scale, etc?

Do you think your experience of the work is the same as what the artist intended?

There are several legal issues in this case which means there are several Supreme Court cases that you have studied that you need to apply to the facts of Danny’s case. Make certain you understand ALL of the legal issues and argue ALL of them. Do not focus on only 1 issue or 1 Supreme Court case.

Q3: Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of both Racehorse’s lawsuit and the state’s position.  Organize your answer. First discuss all of the legal issues in Racehorse’s lawsuit and the Supreme Court cases that support him. Then do the same for the state’s legal position. Minimum 1 page and ½, typed, double-spaced.

Module 4 Assignment (due 3/9, no later than 11:59 pm)

Worth a maximum of 22.5 points toward the final grade

QUESTION 1

Danny Dangerous is an inmate in the Huntsville Unit in the Texas Department of Corrections. Danny’s reading level was tested when he was first admitted into TDC. He was assessed with a 6th grade reading level. His IQ was assessed as average.

Danny appealed his conviction to the Texas Court of Appeals and lost. He now wants to appeal to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals (Texas CCA – the highest court in Texas for criminal cases). Danny is indigent and was assigned counsel for his first appeal, but he has no right to assigned counsel for his appeal to the Texas CCA. He is representing himself and must use the prison’s law library to do legal research. Because his reading level is only at the 6th grade, it take him a long time to read court opinions. He must re-read them several times. It is taking him a long time to prepare his legal papers. He is concerned about meeting court deadlines for filing his pleadings.

Officials of the Huntsville unit decide that they must begin limiting the time each inmate can go to the law library. Many inmates want to go to the library and it has been getting especially crowded in recent months. Inmates can only go to the law library for 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. This is a significant change from allowing inmates to use the law library 6 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Danny realizes that he may not be able to meet court deadlines for his appeal with the new limits on law library usage. He asks permission to use the library more than 3 hours a day. His request is denied. Officials are worried about allowing for exceptions.

Danny must also rely on the library to provide him with paper, pens, and stamps to prepare and mail his legal paperwork. He has no funds in his commissary account to purchase those items. Because Danny struggles with reading and writing, he makes many errors in his legal pleadings (which are handwritten). He often ends up scrapping papers because of those errors and restarts his work on a new, blank page. He uses a lot of paper! The unit provides paper, pens, and stamps to indigent inmates but limits them to only 25 blank pages per month. Danny asks permission to receive additional pieces of paper and is denied.

Danny’s situation gets more complicated! He’s so upset about his appeal and worried about submitting well-prepared court paperwork on time, that he assaults a correctional officer. As a result he is sent to solitary confinement for 15 days. During that time, he cannot go to the law library. Instead, he must “order” the law books he needs to prepare his appeal, and officers bring those specific books to his cell in solitary confinement. He can order 5 books at a time and keep them for 24 hours.

Does Danny have grounds to sue prison officials? In a minimum 1 page and ½, 12 font, double-spaced, discuss BOTH the strengths and weaknesses of his case. Be sure to argue both for and against Danny’s case. Format your answer into 2 parts: for and against. There are several legal issues in this case which means there are several Supreme Court cases that you have studied that you need to apply to the facts of Danny’s case. Make certain you understand ALL of the legal issues and argue ALL of them. Do not focus on only 1 issue or 1 Supreme Court case.

QUESTION 2

Inmate Racehorse H. Jones is an attorney incarcerated in a federal prison for tax fraud and securities violations. He has become a popular writ writer and his legal assistance is in demand. He is also very personable and commands a great deal of respect from the other inmates.

Many inmates who Racehorse assists with their legal work return favors to him. For instance, Inmate Smith, who works in the laundry, makes certain that Racehorse receives starched pants from the laundry on a daily basis. Inmate Maxwell, who works in the front office, makes photocopies for Racehorse whenever he needs them. Starched pants or photocopies are not freely available to all inmates.

Inmate ToughGuy has filed a lawsuit alleging that prison authorities have denied him the opportunity to confer face-to-face with Racehorse on his legal matters. Prison officials cite security concerns for their refusal. ToughGuy is housed in administrative segregation because he is very assaultive. In that status he is housed in his own cell and is permitted to leave it to go to daily exercise and shower once a day.

The only other times he is allowed to leave his cell are medical appointments, visits and classification hearings. He recently assaulted two officers while being escorted to a medical appointment. Prison officials feel that ToughGuy should get legal help from Racehorse through the mail. ToughGuy argues that he is constitutionally entitled to a personal meeting on at least a bi-monthly basis with the best writer in the unit. ToughGuy’s legal matter is very complex.

The warden of the unit has decided that it is time to slow down Racehorse’s legal activities and his popularity. He is particularly concerned that Racehorse is helping inmates housed in administrative segregation.

He has filed a disciplinary report against Racehorse alleging that he is receiving payment for his legal help in violation of the prison’s rules. Inmates Smith and Maxwell testified at the hearing and described their favors to Racehorse after he helped them. Both said they freely performed the favors out of gratitude. Racehorse was found guilty of the violation and was assigned to solitary confinement.

Racehorse has now filed a lawsuit alleging that there was insufficient proof that he received payment for his services. Furthermore, the disciplinary action was a direct result of ToughGuy’s lawsuit. Racehorse has not alleged any procedural irregularities with the hearing. How the disciplinary hearing was conducted is NOT an issue in this case; do not discuss the hearing and how it was conducted.

Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of both Racehorse’s lawsuit and the state’s position. Organize your answer. First discuss all of the legal issues in Racehorse’s lawsuit and the Supreme Court cases that support him. Then do the same for the state’s legal position. Minimum 1 page and ½, typed, double-spaced.
