  1. In your opinion, why do we have a tendency to imitate behavior?
  2. In an earlier study by Bandura, children saw adults either rewarded or punished for violent behavior. Children, regardless of whether the adult was punished or rewarded, were able to verbally state what the adults did, showing that they learned the behavior. Given this and experiences in your own background, what is your stance on the question in the article of “whether reinforcement is primarily a learning-related or a performance-related variable” (p. 590)?
  3. What does “attending responses to televised stimuli are strongly conditioned in children” mean (p. 590)? What are the consequences that condition this behavior?
  4. Look at Figure 1. You will notice a few things: a) boys were more aggressive than girls, b) when viewing the model being rewarded, kids were more likely to demonstrate those behaviors when alone, and c) the use of incentives promoted demonstration of the behaviors, regardless of whether the model was punished or rewarded. If you compare the boys’ and girls’ performance in the “Model Rewarded” and “No consequences” conditions, they are quite similar. Why do you think rewards for the model and no consequences for the model would result in the same behavior patterns?
  5. Bandura stated, “[T]he introduction of positive incentives practically wiped out the prior performance disparity strongly suggest[ing] that the frequently observed sex differences in aggression may reflect primarily differences in willingness to exhibit aggressive responses rather than deficits in learning or ‘masculine-role identification’” (p. 594). Do you feel this statement is accurate? What do you think might contribute to the suggestion that girls might be less willing to be aggressive? Is this situation nature or nurture?

Most of us would personally like to have more information as the serious nature of the procedure increases. Think about this for yourself. What would you want to know?

Assignment Instructions
