3rd. TERM EXAM. April 18, April 25, and May 2nd, 2019 PROJECT PRESENTATION
CIMT-315 Company (The Owner) has awarded to you (The Contractor), the construction project identified as: 3rd. TERM EXAM.
The project in reference includes the following:
GENERAL CONTRACT REQUIREMENTS
- Design and proportioning of the Concrete Mixture, to be used in the construction of a concrete structure. • Construction of a slab on grade, which will be used as a walk path for the project in reference.
- The project MUST be presented individually, during the classes of April 18th, 25th, May 2nd 2019, from 6 to 9 pm, with a MAXIMUM presentation time of 15-20 minutes; 5-6 presentations each day.

Final list of presentation and dates will be sent to you, by the Owner, on Friday April 5th, 2019, once the Owner has the final count of students presenting the project.
- Presentations are encouraged to be creative; PowerPoint, Charts, Tables, Pictures, Guest Speakers presentations, etc.
- CIMT-315 students are encouraged to be present on each of the presentations for all dates of presentation. Attendance shall be considered in the final grade of the project.

- Students choosing to do the presentation or NOT (FINAL DECISION): Thursday April 4th, 2019, 6 pm • FINAL LIST and DATES of Students doing the Project Presentation: Friday April 5th, 2019 • Project Presentation HAND-OUT ONLY: April 18th, 2019. 6 to 8:30 pm
Concrete Mix Design Requirements
Required Average Compressive Strength f’cr (28 days): 4000 psi
Air Entrained for Exterior Exposure: 6 +/- 1%; Recommended dosage: 1.0 fl.oz / 100# of Cement Maximum Allowed Slump: 6 inches
Cement Type and Specific Gravity: Type I Cement; Specific Gravity= 3.15
Coarse Aggregate Nominal Maximum Size: 3/4”
Specific Gravity of Coarse Aggregate: 2.81
Dry Rodded Unit Weight: 99.3 lbs. /ft3
Moisture & Absorption of Coarse Aggregate: 2%, and 0.8%
Specific Gravity of Fine Aggregate: 2.646
Fineness Modulus (FM) of Fine Aggregate: 2.40
Moisture & Absorption of Fine Aggregate: 4.5%, and 0.3%
Concrete shall have a Water Reducer Admixture, allowing a 10% reduction of the mixing water. Recommended dosage: 4.0 fl.oz / 100# of Cement
Placement, Handling, and Finishing Requirements
The slab on grade will have the following dimensions:
Length: 180 feet; Width: 6 feet; Depth: 6 inches
The slab on grade will be placed against an existing concrete structure located at one side of the new slab, and for the total length; one side of the structure will be free of contact.
Concrete will be placed directly from the truck
Concrete slab shall have a broom finishing.
Due to jobsite conditions, concrete placement shall be performed in 2 portions on different days. the 1st Portion: 60% of the total yd3 needed for the structure.
Expansion, Control, and Construction Joints shall be used when necessary.
What the Owner expects from the Contractor (You)
- Design and Proportion of the concrete mixture according to the specifications provided. Design and proportioning must be part of the project but NOT necessarily need to be explained during the presentation.
Final quantities, including units of each material, may be presented in Chart (Spreadsheet), as suggested (see attached SAMPLE)
Use of Necessary Study Material provided in previous classes.
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING:
- How many yd3 of concrete are needed to complete the project?
- Provide a detailed list of tools needed, and briefly explain their use, for the placement, consolidation, finishing, and curing the concrete.
- Does the structure need Control Joints? YES: _________ NO: __________; if the answer is Yes, indicate how many joints, the spacing, and explain the reason for them to be used. If the answer is NO, explain the reasons and the source of the criteria
- Does the structure need Isolation Joints? YES: _________ NO: __________; if the answer is Yes, indicate the location of the joint, and the reason for its use. If the answer is NO, explain the reasons for not using this type of joint.
- Does the structure need Construction Joints? YES: _________ NO: __________; if the answer is Yes, indicate the reason for its use, and the location of the joint. If the answer is NO, explain the reasons for not using this type of joint.
- Does the structure need to be cured? YES: _________ NO: __________; if the answer is Yes, explain the reasons for using curing, the method you would use, and how it would be applied. If the answer is NO, explain why curing would not be used.
- Knowing that the concrete is to be placed in 2 separate portions, and 60% of the total yd3 would be on the 1st portion; Determine the length that the 1st pour would cover.
- Considering that the air temperature at the day of placement is 85 *F and rising;
What should or could be done at the Plant as well as the jobsite in order to place, consolidate, and finish the concrete properly? Please explain in detail.
- If the concrete placement were during the Cold Weather months,
What should or could be done at the Plant as well as the jobsite in order to place, consolidate, and finish the concrete properly? Please explain in detail.
